The Mike

Both mike and mic commonly appear as shortened forms of microphone, but mike is the accepted spelling in most dictionaries. Mic presents difficulties because it looks like it should be pronounced mick and because it produces the problematic participles miced and micing. The first microphone that enabled proper voice telephony was the carbon microphone. David Edward Hughes developed it independently in England and Emile Berliner and Thomas Edison in the US. In 1827, sir Charles Wheatstone was the first person to coin the phrase “microphone”. A mic drop is an emphatic and declarative gesture signifying the conclusion of a performance of note, often literally (or as if) dropping a microphone.
